On June 14, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) announced the winners of the 2017 Circle of Excellence Awards. Columbia Magazine received seven awards, including a Gold for staff writing and a Grand Gold for illustrations by Demetrios Psillos. The article that contained the winning artwork — portraits of Columbia professor Phillip Lopate ’64CC and other essayists — also received a Silver for editorial design.

This year, more than 715 higher-education institutions, independent schools, and nonprofits worldwide submitted more than 3,364 entries for consideration in nearly one hundred categories. The judging panel, which was made up of professionals in the field, noted Columbia Magazine’s “consistent quality” and described its stories as “maddeningly good.” A citation for the Gold award for staff writing recognized that each of the magazine’s feature articles “delivered a creative and original narrative that made for compelling reading.”

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education is one of the largest international associations of educational institutions, serving more than 3,670 universities, colleges, schools, and related organizations in more than eighty-two countries. CASE is the leading resource for professional development, information, and standards in the fields of education fundraising, communications, marketing, and alumni relations.
