New Road to Rome Honors Sovern

The American Academy in Rome and the Friends of Columbia University have established an annual fellowship program to send a Columbia faculty member, student, or administrator to the Academy, grantor of the prestigious Rome Prize, for a four-to six-week academic retreat.

The fellowship is named for Michael I. Sovern ’53CC, ’55LAW, ’80HON, the former Columbia University president, provost, and law school dean who stepped down last fall as chairman of the board of the Academy. Recipients chosen by the Columbia provost will receive free room and board in Rome, where they can attend concerts, conferences, exhibitions, lectures, readings, and symposia, as well as have access to the Academy’s libraries and archives.
