This summer, the University appointed Alondra Nelson the dean of social science and Sharon Marcus the dean of humanities, positions that involve working with fellow academic deans to manage the departments, research centers, and institutes in their divisions in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. More specifically, they will help to oversee budgets and faculty hiring, as well as the departments’ compliance with equal-opportunity and conflict-of-interest policies.
Nelson is a sociology professor recruited to Columbia from Yale in 2009; Marcus, the Orlando Harriman Professor of English and Comparative Literature, has taught here since 2003. As divisional deans, they join physics professor Amber Miller, who has served as dean of science since 2011.
